Lead Service Line Replacement Program
The City of Shawano Public Works Department is working to develop a program that will replace all publicly- and privately-owned lead service lines that are connected to the public water system in the City of Shawano. We are working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources with the goal of receiving public grant funding that will cover all private homeowner’s costs to replace their lead service line with a new plastic service line. If grant funding is received, a citywide lead service line replacement program will occur between 2021 and 2022.
As part of this initiative, Shawano Public Works will be working to verify residential water service line materials in throughout the City over the next few months. This is necessary to ensure that all public and private lead service lines have been identified and can be replaced.
To complete these verifications, we are asking that those residents that live in homes built prior to 1975 to please contact our Public Works staff at 715-526-3512 to schedule your inspection. This inspection typically takes less than 15 minutes, with the technicians requesting access to your water meter, typically located in the basement. Verifications of service lines have already been taking place, with staff continuing to work through the remaining properties. Inspections will be scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
All utility staff will carry photo identification with their name and the City of Shawano logo.
The City of Shawano maintains our commitment to providing you with clean and safe drinking water. We view the elimination of lead from the public water supply as a community priority, and our efforts to do so persist during the COVID-19 pandemic, with added precautions taken for your safety and the safety of our employees.
The City of Shawano takes the threat of COVID-19 very seriously, and our technicians will wear a face covering when entering your home and observe social distancing guidelines, which includes maintaining a 6-foot physical separation from others. While our technicians are completing verifications inside of your home, we ask that you please follow all CDC recommendations to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including wearing a face covering and maintaining at least a 6-foot physical separation with our technicians.
We appreciate your cooperation in this effort to make Shawano's water system lead-free in 2021-2022. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this process, please contact us at 715-526-3512.
